“Abi Harrison has had an injury to her ankle in training last week, so she’ll be missing this weekend as well. Sarah Stratagakis has also got an illness, so she’s going to be unavailable for this weekend. So two new injuries for that list.”
Despite Harrison’s sidelined omission seeing her absent in a crucial point of the campaign for the Robins, Smith confirmed that Harrison’s ankle injury is “not long term”.
Bristol City currently occupy dangerous territory within the league table’s drop zone, having only gathered a six-point tally throughout their season thus far. Despite the precarious position that her side find themselves in, Smith expressed that motivating her squad is an easy feat.
“It’s really easy to motivate this group, and I think it’s because the results have been so close. We’ve been in games, which was a different feeling to some of the games early in the season. Things are starting to come together, the performances are quite strong.
So motivation is really easy, we’re still chasing the wins. When we get points and teams in and around us get points, it just fuels the fire a bit more to just make sure that we stay within the fight for as long as possible. Which I think we’ve got the ability to do, and certainly the drive and motivation.”
Bristol City travel to King Power Stadium this coming Sunday, as a meeting with Leicester City awaits. Previewing the upcoming clash with the Foxes, Smith packed on the praise for her managerial counterpart in Willie Kirk.
“I think Willie [Kirk] has recruited really really well as a team there. He’s got some really good players that have come into the fold since this time last year. He has had three windows now where he’s made huge recruitment choices to strengthen that squad. Which allows him to play really expansive football- they’re a really attacking team who want to out score you.”
The previous meeting between the two sides saw the fixture end in 4-2 defeat for the Robins at Ashton Gate. Smith expressed that her side “learnt a few lessons there” and will be eagerly looking to reset the scale this coming Sunday.
Bristol City will travel to King Power Stadium this Sunday, as they face Leicester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League at 3pm.
