All was ready to head underway in Birmingham, as a Barclays Women’s Super League clash between Aston Villa and Leicester City was set to commence in exciting fashion at Bescot Stadium.

In the first game since former Leicester City Willie Kirk’s was sacked, Lioness Rachel Daley shows her class with an equaliser and hold Leicester City to a draw. Both teams were attacking, but Leicester were unlucky to not secure the three points which would have moved them level on points with Villa, who have won just one league game at home this season.

AVL: Leat; Maritz, Pattern, Corsie, Turner, Nobbs, Dali, Leon, Daly, Lehmann, Salmon

LEI: Kop; Bott, Green, Howard, Cayman, Takarada, Rantala, Tierney, Momiki, Rose, Petermann

The first half proved to be an exciting game of end to end game of football, as both sides came out looking strong and focused as proceedings commenced in the Midlands. Within the first ten minutes, Rachel Daly tested her efforts at a convincing powerful strike, which was well-saved by Leicester goalkeeper, Lize Kop, between the goalposts. From that point onwards, Villa saw a flurry of chances as play entered the ninth minute – though a triple save from Kop saw the Foxes breathe out a sigh of relief.

Early on in the fixture, it was Leicester City whom looked compact and strong out of possession, though the Foxes proved wasteful with some of their chances and hard-worked efforts to press the Villans in the final third.

The first goal of the game came in the form of a well-pierced cross from the foot of Ebony Salmon, as Adriana Leon tapped the ball into the the back of the net at close range in a cool finish to put Villa in front.

Leicester then retaliated just two minutes later with an equaliser worked from the corner ball, into the feet of Yuka Momiki who sent Anna Leat diving the wrong way, as the Foxes saw themselves immediately back in the game.

After an exciting first half that left both sides even, each side returned for the second half of proceedings, unchanged.

Ten minutes into the second half and Japanese forward Momiki once again demonstrated the attacking threat that she is. Momiki stepped up to take a free-kick in the 55th minute, brilliantly curving the cross in for Sam Tierney who headed home the advantage for the Foxes. As well as setting up Leicester’s second goal, Momiki was denied a personal double when Leat produced a superb fingertip save.

Despite a strong defensive display from Leicester City, and much like many of their storylines this season, they were unable to hold on to the lead as the fixture drew into it’s final stages. It would be Jordan Nobbs who provided the assist to complete the comeback, as her lofting ball over Leicester’s last line found Daly, who made no mistake in firing home the equaliser from close range.

The result means that Aston Villa remain in 7th place, with a total of twenty points on the Barclays Women’s Super League table, whilst Leicester City occupy ninth place within a three-point margin from their Saturday opponents.
