The lone league fixture of the weekend closed off an eventful Sunday of FA Cup action, as Arsenal geared up to host Bristol City in a Barclays Women’s Super League clash at Meadow Park.

The Gunners make their league return since bringing home the silverware in the FA Continental Tyres League Cup final prior to the international break, as Jonas Eidevall opts for a dual change since his last outing. Frida Maanum is absent from the team sheet as she undergoes a meaningful period of rest and recovery, as Cloé Lacasse also drops to the bench to make way for both Alessia Russo and Caitlin Foord. Teyah Goldie makes her return to the match day squad, after registering 45 minutes with the U23s during the week.

Lauren Smith welcomes back both Rachel Furness and Naomi Layzell into the match day squad, as both look to make their impact from the bench.

Bristol City got proceedings underway in Borehamwood, as the visitors searched to garner any momentum amidst their growing drop zone worries as the 2023/24 season begins draws to a close.

However, it wouldn’t be long before the Gunners made their mark on Meadow Park, as Caitlin Foord left Amy Rodgers in the dust along the left flank. Her shot-off was narrowly deflected, before Beth Mead provided the final touch to give the hosts the advantage inside of six minutes.

The Gunners continued to flex their muscles, as Kim Little carried possession into the final third. Finding Steph Catley with cleverness, the Arsenal number 7 had her shot blocked by the desperation last line of the Robins. Just moments later, Victoria Pelova clattered the crossbar with her promising strike from distance.

Stina Blackstenius looked the double the advantage in the 18th minute, though goalkeeping heroics from Fran Bentley palmed her strike away from danger. More would follow from Bentley, as Arsenal’s brilliant link-up play gave Alessia Russo an opportunity on goal, before the Robins keeper denied her entry from close range.

Russo combined well with Foord on the outer flank, before an expert cut back from the Australian winger saw the light flicker ambitiously in Kim Little’s eye. The Gunners skipper liked her chances from range, though her strike flew just high of the cross bar.

As the chances continued to pile in, Arsenal would double their advantage in the 32nd minute as a scuffle inside of the box saw Mead capitalise on the scraps to find herself a brace.

Matters would only be made worse for the Gunners, as the left-side Aussies combined well to allow Catley a cross-off inside of the area. Ella Powell’s unfortunate deflection managed to lob Bentley between the posts, to give the Gunners their third of the evening.

The hosts would maintain their trilogy advantage heading into the half time interval, leaving Lauren Smith’s Bristol City outfit with a growing pile of unanswered questions heading into the second half.

The visitors looked to respond as the clock ran into the second half, with Jamie-Lee Napier sending a line breaking ball through the Gunners defence and into the path of an advancing Emily Syme. Syme’s party was gatecrashed with brilliance, as a tracking Steph Catley put in a perfect sliding challenge to deny the Robins midfielder of any attempt.

As Arsenal regained the momentum once again, Alessia Russo made something out of nothing and tested her strike from range. Despite Bentley making contact on the way through, Russo’s brilliant strike from distance found the top corner as the Gunners gained their fourth.

Emily Fox carried possession with conviction, before her inverting run saw the American defender in a good looking position to shoot from range. In what looked like a brilliant strike from distance, Bentley’s heroics saw her palm away the danger at highest flight.

Though the Robins would only marginally escape the onslaught of the hosts, as Katie McCabe found Russo with a pinpoint cross inside of the area. The Lionesses striker made no mistake in converting her strike, finding herself a brace and Arsenal’s fifth of the evening.

The North Bank erupted in the 80th minute, as Laura Wienroither made her return to the pitch after a gruelling spell on the sidelines after rupturing her ACL against VFL Wolfsburg in the late stages of last season.

The Gunners would preserve their five goal advantage until the final whistle, as the home fans cheered out over an emphatic victory in Borehamwood. As for Arsenal’s opponents, Bristol City’s position grows increasingly more dire with just four matches left to salvage their stay in the top flight.
