On course for an immediate return to the Championship after failing to register a victory in the Barclays Women’s Super League since November 5th, bottom-of-the-table Bristol City replaced the injured Fran Bentley with Shae Yáñez, as Jasmine Bull also returns.

11 points adrift of Arsenal- who currently occupy the final Barclays Women’s Super League European qualification position- Liverpool would be searching for a miraculous turn of events to keep their dream alive of a maiden appearance in the UEFA Champions League.

Club captain Taylor Hinds was named in the starting XI after her recovery from injury, while Teagan Micah was also recalled in goal as Rachael Laws dropped to the substitutes’ bench.

BRI: Yáñez; Layzell, Bull, Aspin, Connolly, Napier; Rogers, Morgan, Syme, Furness, Thestrup

LIV: Micah; Parry, Hinds, Nagano, Fisk; Bo Kearns, Clark, Höbinger, Haug; Kieran, Enderby

Already encountering each other twice this season, Matt Beard’s side reigned undefeated across both the Barclays WSL and the Adobe Women’s FA Cup. In fast fashion, the visitors were rewarded with the game’s opening goal in the 13th minute.

Missy Bo Kearns’ clinical cross from the left-hand side was met by Marie Höbinger, who fired a sublimely-struck strike that nestled nicely in the corner of the net, leaving returning Robins’ goalkeeper Shae Yáñez without the chance to make a save.

In response to falling behind, the hosts responded positively whilst knowing a defeat would all but confirm their relegation. Only a cruel flag for offside denied Rachel Furness an equaliser almost immediately from the restart. Ultimately, Höbinger’s 13th-minute opener – against the backdrop of a sun-drenched Ashton Gate – marked the only significant action in front of goal across the remainder of the first half.

Determined to put the game to bed and avoid any unnecessary late headaches, Liverpool came within inches of doubling their lead within four minutes of the restart by hitting the woodwork from a distance. The hosts’ top goalscorer this season, Amalie Threstrup, then forced an expert save from Micah. It wouldn’t be long before play made it’s way to the opposite end of the pitch, as Kearns saw her goal-bound strike well stopped by Yáñez.

Despite a determined effort to salvage a much-needed share of the spoils, Bristol City agonisingly came up short, as an away day success for Liverpool closes the gap to third-placed Arsenal to just eight points. Jonas Eidevall’s side will still have an all-important game in hand on their closest Champions League rivals. Meanwhile, a victory for West Ham United away against the title-challengers in Manchester City tomorrow afternoon will sadly confirm the Robins’ return to the Championship next season.
