Australia pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat Zambia 6-5 in a pulsating Olympic group stage game in Nice.
After going 5-2 down, things were looking bleak for the Matildas. But, they rallied back and somehow clawed their way back into the game and stole all three points.
Here’s how we rate the performance of every Aussie player, as they bounced back on the French Riviera.

Wasn’t a convincing performance at all from Arnold. Wasn’t her normal self when it came to gathering crosses, or even holding onto shots. It’s certainly a worry, especially with the USA on the horizon.
Ellie Carpenter 2/10
Questions need to be asked about Carpenter’s defensive abilities. They were on show against Germany, but they were rubber stamped in this game against Zambia. Vacated open spaces which Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundanaji exploited. You wonder what the likes of Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman could do against her.
Alanna Kennedy 4/10
In a very low-quality award, Kennedy was the best Australian defender. Was able to get around the pitch well and covered her lines, but again, allowed space to open up and was punished for it.
Clare Hunt 3/10
Another defender who had another poor display. Was bullied far too easily by the likes of Banda and Kundananji, and it was brutal to watch. The defence will be very grateful that the attack bailed them out.
Steph Catley 6/10
Embed from Getty ImagesUndoubtedly, her goals will be talked about, but again, from a defensive standpoint, Catley was found out. Her lack of speed is a real worry in this Australian side, and if they are to progress through this tournament, teams will certainly target that left side.
Hayley Raso 5/10
Raso enjoyed a lot of success down the wing. She ran after every ball over the top, put in some good deliveries, and got herself a goal. The free agent could perhaps count herself a little unlucky to come off when she did, because her performance wasn’t at all dreadful. Subbed on 57th minute.
Katrina Gorry 7/10
Like her performance against Germany, Gorry was solid and never stopped working. She could have added a goal to her collection, but it wasn’t to be. A lot of fingers will be pointed in the aftermath of this game, but none should be pointed at the West Ham midfielder. Subbed off 57th minute.
Kyra Cooney-Cross 5.5/10
Put in some good deliveries from set-pieces, but the middle of the park wasn’t an area where either team wanted to play in today, and therefore, we didn’t see much of the Arsenal midfielder.
Caitlin Foord 2/10
Came into a bit of life in the closing stages, but the game before then left so many question marks about Foord’s selection. Her lack of delivery, her lack of speed, her lack of finishing were all on show in this game. A very poor display again from the winger. Could she make way in the game against the USA?
Mary Fowler 6/10
Embed from Getty ImagesFowler wasn’t afraid to try and make things happen against Germany, and it felt like she was doing that role again for Australia tonight.
Emily van Egmond 4/10
van Egmond was the only change from the side that lost to Germany, and she didn’t provide much to this Aussie team tonight. On occasions she wasn’t seen on the pitch, got lost, and wasn’t able to assert herself in a high-scoring game, which is worrying for any forward. Subbed off 57th minute.
Kaitlyn Torpey 6/10
Subbed on 57th minute. Came on and didn’t have much of an impact. Maybe understandable given the lunacy of this game but showed small glimpses of what she can do.
Clare Wheeler 7/10
Subbed on 57th minute. Took over from where Raso left off really well. Attacked the wing well, put in good crosses, linked well with others. A good substitution at a good time by Tony Gustavsson.
Michelle Heyman 8/10
Subbed on 57th minute. Player of the match by a mile. Came on and really changed the game. She showed great pace, great power, and a drive and determination to get on the end of things. She has to start the next game.
