Emma Hayes’ American machine keeps rolling on, as they defeated Germany 4-1 to book their place in the last eight.

A brace from Sophia Smith, coupled with goals for Mallory Swanson and Lynn Williams, made it a very comfortable night for the Americans, who are sitting pretty at the top of Group B.

Here’s how we rate the performance of every US player who stepped out onto the pitch in Marseille.

Alyssa Naher: 6/10

Made a really good save early on to deny Lea Schüller, but after that, Naeher didn’t have much to do. She could do nothing about the goal, but her distribution, once again, was outstanding, especially to her wingers.

Emily Fox: 8/10

After seeing what Jule Brand did to Ellie Carpenter, not many would have fancied doing Fox’s role tonight, but she did it very well. Really restricted the abilities of the Wolfsburg star, and overall, was part of a really solid defensive display. Subbed off 90^th minute.

Naomi Girma: 7.5/10

Girma really is your typical Rolls-Royce centre half. She never runs, and that’s because her positioning is second to none. The San Diego Wave star really marked Schüller out of the game, and it was another strong display from her.

Tierna Davidson: 6/10

A real shame that Davidson was forced off because of injury in the first half. The partnership of her and Girma once again looked solid in Marseille. Let’s hope it’s not a serious injury. Subbed off 44^th minute.

Crystal Dunn: 7.5/10

Like Fox, the task of marking someone like Klara Bühl for 90 minutes doesn’t sound particularly easy, but Dunn stuck to her task expertly and gave the Bayern winger no space or time at all. It’s going to take something special to get past her.

Samantha Coffey: 6.5/10

Coffey always does a good job at marshalling the defence, but tonight wasn’t her best night. Germany scored as a result of her vacating her space, and Sjoeke Nüsken had a good night playing between the lines too. Coffey might be someone Hayes will have to mentor a bit before the next game.

Lindsey Horan: 7/10

You never really notice what Horan does, and that’s because she does what she needs to do so well. She gets around the pitch, can defend, can attack, has such a wide range of passing. This American team doesn’t tick without Horan.

Rose Lavelle: 8/10

What a joy it was to watch Lavelle perform tonight. No one quite joins an attack like she does, and the way that she brings everything together is spectacular. She feels like a conductor to this noisy and dynamic front three.

Trinity Rodman: 9/10

Another brilliant display from Rodman. It always looks like she has far more space than anyone else she’s sharing the field with, and that isn’t because the defences she’s playing against are bad, but because her movement is mesmeric. Subbed off 90^th minute.

Mallory Swanson: 7.5/10

It does sound ridiculous to call a 26-year-old Mallory Swanson as the elder stateswoman of this front three, but she is the perfect middle ground to Rodman and Smith. Always knows which space to go into, always knows when to aid and when not to. This front three is certainly the best in these Olympics.

Sophia Smith: 9/10

If you haven’t watched Sophia Smith yet, make sure you do! The Portland Thorn is absolutely box office. She can dribble like Messi, she has the shot power of Ronaldo, she has the speed of Bale. There’s nothing she can’t do, and she showcased that tonight as she scored a brace. Subbed off 85^th minute.

Emily Sonnett: 7/10

Subbed on 44^th minute. You wouldn’t have even noticed Davidson was gone with how well Sonnett performed. It says a lot about her ability, but also about this system, that everyone knows their role and can execute it perfectly.

Lynn Williams: 7/10

Subbed on 85^th minute. Scoring four minutes after coming on is just something Lynn Williams can do effortlessly. The way she found that spaced and produced a delicate finish was brilliant.
