Canada continued to fight against the waves of ‘DroneGate’ as they faced Germany in the quarter finals in Marseille. As a collective, they hardly put a foot wrong. Whilst Germany threw everything at them, Canada remained compact and resilient to all their advances, and hit them on the counter. On the attack, they created well and support themselves in numbers, but as ever, lacked a clinical edge.

Here’s what we rated Canada for their fixture against Germany.

Kaylan Sheridan 8/10

Like her entire backline, Sheridan rarely put a foot wrong. Assured and strong in collecting high balls, the keeper was dependable and key. Building well from the back and distributing well, Sheridan showed her best once again for Canada.

Jade Rose 7/10

For a player of such youth, Jade Rose plays like an experienced equal amongst her fellow defenders. Handling Bühl well, and minimising her efforts out wide to perfection, the defender displayed the full range of her qualities. Added in attack and got the best of Germany’s defence at times.

Vanessa Gilles 8/10

Gilles continued her trend of showing her strengths at these games. Tracking the German attackers to perfection and toeing chances away. she was deliberate and self-assured in her chances. Despite a missed header in the 60th minute, Gilles showed all the intricacies of her game.

Kadeisha Buchanan 8/10

Along with Gilles, Buchanan showed her best qualities. Stealthy and strong, she kept Lea Schüller quiet in attack, and minimised their efforts accordingly. Rarely putting a foot wrong in defence, she snuffed out German chances with the experience and poise she possess.

Gabreille Carle 7/10

Carle had her best game of the Olympics. Decent in other fixtures, she played well against the stealthy attack of Germany. Handling and frustrating Brand to new levels, the full-back was strong and resilient and added to attack well.

Quinn 7/10

Working well with Awujo in the double pivot, Quinn was strong and hearty in midfield. Adding in attack as well as defence, they was experienced and composed in all area of play.

Simi Awujo 7/10

Similarly to Quinn, Awujo was stealthy and had fortitude throughout the game. Minimising the efforts of the German midfield, the youngster was precise and sturdy. Some questionable decisions in the box in the first half, but overall, a good performance from the 20 year old.

Ashley Lawrence 7/10

Quieter than her other games in Paris, Lawrence grew the most in the game. Her usual techniques of booming forward weren’t worth the risk against an all out attacking Germany but were possible as Canada grew comfortable in attack.

Jessie Fleming 7/10

Despite a half time substitute for the Canadian captain for an injury sustained in the first half, Fleming was her usual engine for Canada in the first half. Tidy, explosive and technical, the only thing missing from her appearance was a deserved goal. Despite her chances, she couldn’t find the back of the net, but shone everywhere else.

Would have scored higher if she hadn’t been taken off at half time due to a suspected injury rotation.

Jordyn Huitema 6/10

Huitema had some good movements and played decently off the front. She operated the wing well and took her chances in her stride when they came. With one shot and no creation, Huitema looked unassuming for the most part and only looked good in snapshot moments. Her chances lacked the clinical edge and Canada looked more likely to score after her removal.

Nichelle Prince 6/10

Similarly to Huitema, Prince was quiet and unassuming. With only 15 touches, and one chance created, Prince was dampened by the Germans. The change in formation did nothing to push her game forward and looked as unimpressive as her other appearances.

Adriana Leon 5/10

Subbed on in the 57th minute. No end product despite creating solid chances for the Canadians.

Janine Beckie 6/10

Subbed on to replace Jessie Fleming. The side were funcitoning better in the second half, as Beckie helped Canada gain further control of the tempo.

Cloé Lacasse 6/10

Subbed on in the 57th minute. Lacasse worked well to create opportunities for her side, though like Leon, lacked the cutting edge to make a real impact.

Evelyne Viens 6.5/10

Subbed on in the 57th minute. Instigated positive forward action whilst also providing her side in defence.

Julia Grosso N/A

Didn’t play long enough to make a fair judgement. Subbed on in the 108th minute.
