In the end it would be Spain who stole the victory in Marseille, as the World Champions needed penalties to sneak past Colombia and book their spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics semi-finals.

After being punched in the mouth not once, but twice, Spain recovered thanks to goals from Jenni Hermoso and Irene Paredes, before going on to win the game in the ultimate test of nerve.

Here’s how we rate the performance of every Spanish player who stepped out onto the pitch in Lyon.

Cata Coll 6/10

A real game of two halves for Coll. In the first, she looked shaky. Positionally, wasn’t too sure of herself, and certainly has to take some blame for that second goal. However, after that, she recovered well and made some fine saves to keep Spain in it. Also went on to save one of Colombia’s penalties.

Ona Batlle 8/10

One of the better Spanish players. Restricted Linda Caicedo very well while she was on the field, and in extra time, she was picking up some good positions while playing more of an inverted wing-back role. Set up the goal to get the Spanish side back in it.

Irene Paredes 6/10

Recovered well after allowing Mayra Ramírez to score the opener, but looked extremely shaky across moments. The more obvious part of her game today was her attacking side. She really attacked the box well, whether that was with her head or her feet, and she deserved her goal.

Laia Aleixandri 5/10

The Manchester City defender couldn’t cope with what Ramírez was giving her today. Giving away fouls and offloading her to Paredes was all that she could do. This was the first time in a long time that we’ve seen the City star come out second best in a tussle. Subbed off 78th minute.

Olga Carmona 7/10

Plenty of Spanish players were underperforming during this game, but Carmona wasn’t one of them. The World Cup final goal scorer was a menace down the left, and Colombia couldn’t deal with her. Once again, her deliveries were exceptional, and she did her work defensively too. Subbed off 65th minute.

Patri Guijarro 4/10

What Spain needed in their midfield was a tenacious tackler, and someone who could act as a guardian in front of the defence. Patri couldn’t offer that today, and it really hurt her side, especially as she couldn’t deal with the strength of the Colombian midfield. Subbed off 52nd minute.

Aitana Bonmatí 5/10

A little better than her Barcelona teammates in the middle of the park, but not much. Every time she got on the ball, she was swarmed by yellow shirts. Couldn’t play the passes that she would’ve liked to, and when she had a golden chance to score in the first half, the Ballon d’Or winner couldn’t take it.

Alexia Putellas 4/10

Since her injury, Putellas has been a moments player. That goal in Bilbao, that free kick in Nantes, it’s been moments. In games like this one, where the physical demands are high, it acts as a reminder that the once queen of football hasn’t recaptured all of her powers just quite yet. Subbed off 65th minute.

Athenea del Castillo 4/10

Normally, Athenea gets stuck into every attack, uses blistering speed to hurt others, and has a knack of arriving in the right place at the right time. We saw none of that today. She always had a defender on her shoulders, and she wasn’t able to impact the game. Subbed off 79th minute.

Salma Paralluelo 8/10

As ever, Paralluelo was the constant danger throughout this game. The way she can suddenly burst into a yard of space with her incredible pace is frightening. Helped to set up a goal, and certainly could’ve had one herself in the 120 minutes.

Mariona Caldentey 7/10

Was constantly trying to create. Whether that was down the wing or cutting inside, the now Arsenal winger was always trying to pick out a teammate. Herself and Paralluelo were on the same side during extra time, and you wonder if one was on the other wing, whether Spain would’ve been better.

Teresa Abelleira 7/10

Subbed on 52nd minute. After a good display against Brazil, Abelleira could count herself unlucky not to start this game. When she did appear, she was that combative midfielder Spain needed, and she helped change the tide of the game.

Jenni Hermoso 9/10

Subbed on 65th minute. Oh, how Spain needed their record goal scorer. They didn’t have a focal point up front for a long time in this game, but when Hermoso came on, she provided just that. Someone that wasn’t afraid to match the Colombian physicality, and without her, Spain don’t win this game. For perhaps younger fans of the game, this was like watching the Hermoso of old.

Alba Redondo 5/10

Subbed on 65th minute. Didn’t influence the game as much as she would have liked. During her time on the field, Spain utilised the other wing more, and the now Real Madrid player didn’t come in off the wing as much as she could have done.

Laia Codina 7/10

Subbed on 78th minute. When Codina came on, Spain weren’t particularly focused on defending, and in fact, didn’t need to do much of it during extra time. However, she never put a foot wrong during the very rare times when Colombia countered.

Eva Navarro 6/10

Subbed on 79th minute. Another substitute who had a really positive impact. A willing runner, always offering herself to others, taking Colombian players out of the game with clever positioning, an all-round solid display.
