An extra time winner from Sophia Smith saw the USA fly home to a 1-0 victory in Lyon against a trying German side.

As the USA now prepare for a gold medal meeting with either Spain or Brazil at Parc de Princes, read how we rated each American to step onto the field in tonight’s semi-final.

Alyssa Naeher 9/10

A standout performance from the US number 1. Made a vital save in the dying moments to deny the Germans of an equaliser.

Emily Fox 7/10

A solid performance from the right back on the occasion. Worked well to nullify any threat of pace down the German left side and made no real mistakes in the process.

One of her more quiet nights on the attacking side of things, likely due to the fatigue of having played five games in 12 days.

Naomi Girma 9/10

A really authoritative performance from Girma. Made a vital challenge on Nicole Anyomi in the opening stages to deny Germany of the an early opener. A complete performance from the USA centre half.

Tierna Davidson 7/10

A really solid performance from a returning Tierna Davidson. Herself and Girma proved to be a rock-solid partnership. Subbed off at half-time presumably for load management.

Crystal Dunn 6/10

Perhaps her weakest performance of the tournament so far. Germany were able to exploit her wing on several occasions. Subbed off in the 91st minute.

Sam Coffey 8/10

It is night and day when Sam Coffey is involved in the USA side. A true and natural holding midfielder who is able to dictate the play and provide her defence with confidence and comfort. Always showing dynamic movement and adapts to the press.

Rose Lavelle 6/10

A quiet performance from the midfield mainstay. Struggled against the run of play in moments and was often caught-out in possession.

Lindsey Horan 5/10

Wasteful in possession and slow in dropping back- the USA captain struggled to find her footing throughout the 90 minutes. Subbed off at the 90th minute during the break before extra time.

Trinity Rodman 7/10

Gut running from Rodman to cover the entire field in both attack and defence. Tried to inject pace into a fatigued USA side, but often to no avail. Looked to be the only real outlet for her side as the clock ran down on regular time.

Sophia Smith 8/10

A quiet evening to start with for Smith as she began to look fatigued. Struggled to make a true impact in the 90 minutes. USA had a solid opportunity in the 85th minute to carry possession, but ultimately over-hit her through ball.

Turned the tide in the 6th minute of extra time as Mallory Swanson slotted through a ball onto the advance of Smith. Without hesitation, Smith took her strike with one touch, firing home the winner for her side.

Her work rate was imperative for the USA, as the Portland Thorns forward put in crucial defensive work to keep her side pressing on the German side.

Mallory Swanson 7/10

Slightly wasteful and hurried with her chances in the opening half. Missed a really crucial chance in the second-half where she managed to make it past Ann-Katrin Berger, but fired her strike into the side netting. Another chance in the dying moments of regular time that she slotted home but was found offside.

Brilliant ball through to assist Sophia Smith for the winner. Looked far more dynamic as the clock ran down.

Lynn Williams 5/10

Subbed on in the 59th minute. Struggled to make a real impact when brought on. Could be chalked down to the front-four formation employed when she was brought on the field.

Emily Sonnett 7/10

Subbed on at half time in replacement of Tierna Davidson. Rock solid alongside Girma, making no real mistakes in the last line.

Jenna Nighswonger 7/10

Subbed on in the 91st minute. A really solid performance to nullify any German attacking threat down the width. Adapted really well considering the stakes.

Korbin Albert 6/10

Did her job well after coming on in the 91st minute. No tangible attacking moments, but held the space against any German press.

Casey Krueger N/A

Subbed on on the 110th minute. Not enough time on the field to make a fair assessment.
