For the fourth time in their history, Germany claimed the Olympic Bronze Medal, as they defeated Spain 1-0 at Groupama Stadium in Lyon.
Having been able to welcome back some key players, Germany overcame some late Spanish pressure to preserve their lead, all thanks to their taliswoman in goal.
Here’s how we rate every German player who appeared at the Groupama Stadium this afternoon.
Ann-Katrin Berger 10/10
Just perfect. Absolutely perfect. It’s insane to think Berger only became the German number one in the last year, because she brings so much to this squad. She is a presence, she’s commanding, she’s intimidating. It wouldn’t even be too far to say that she’s the best goalkeeper in the world at this moment in time.
Giulia Gwinn 9/10
Gwinn has really stated her case to be potentially named as Player of the Tournament. Playing higher up the field today, Gwinn was quick to get in front of her markers, able to pick out others, used her strength well; every aspect of her game today was superb. Subbed off 96th minute.
Sarai Linder 7/10
Linder returned to the lineup after injury, and she added a really good balance to this side. Her presence allowed Gwinn to go forward, but she more than held it down in defence. Paralluelo never had much success against the new Wolfsburg defender.
Marina Hegering 8/10
What a performance from both the centre backs today. Starting with Hegering, she defended the box like her life depended on it. From a positional standpoint, she was nothing short of excellent, and young defenders can look at her display today and learn a lot.
Kathrin Hendrich 8/10
Embed from Getty ImagesHendrich was the bad cop to Hegering’s good cop. She was not afraid to tackle hard today, and every single time, she executed them perfectly. It was her who gave away the penalty at the end, but looking back on it, the contact was minimal to non-existent, but Hendrich was excellent.
Felicitas Rauch 7/10
Rauch hasn’t had the easiest of tournaments, but she did really well today. Athenea isn’t the easiest of players to handle, but the NC Courage full-back contained her well and never allowed her to step inside and do her own thing.
Janina Minge 8/10
Panic set in across Deutschland when Lena Oberdorf suffered a lengthy injury, but Minge has come in and taken to international football like a duck to water. Against that Spanish midfield, you really have to step up, and she did just that. She commanded the area and won the ball more often than not.
Sjoeke Nüsken 6/10
It never felt like Nüsken’s day today. That wasn’t because of a lack of effort or a lack of quality, but instead, she was dealt with by Abelleira. It shows that the Chelsea midfielder still has a lot to learn in this game, but we all know just how much talent she has.
Jule Brand 7/10
Brand wasn’t as explosive as she has been this tournament, but she still had her moments. Quick feet and impeccable agility are the foundations of her game, and she proved why she’s one of the best at doing both during this tournament.
Alex Popp 7/10
Embed from Getty ImagesWhile she may not have showcased her on the ball talent (apart from that pinpoint ball through to Schüller), what Popp did bring to this side is leadership. There was always a presence running through the spine of the team with Popp in the fold. The big question is, was this her final major tournament?
Klara Bühl 7/10
Ran her heart out in the first half, and embarrassed Oihane Hernandez with a mesmeric bit of skill that wouldn’t look out of place on Soccer AM’s showboat segment. Surprising that Hrubesch brought her off at the break, as she was one of Germany’s better players. Subbed off at half time.
Lea Schüller 5/10
Subbed on at half time. Thankfully for Schüller, that one-on-one miss with Coll didn’t matter in the end, because if it did, it would have kept waking her up at night. It begs a question as to just how fit the Bayern forward was when she stepped onto the field.
Sara Doorsoun N/A
Subbed on 96th minute. Wasn’t on the field long enough to make an impact.
