Birmingham City were out for blood against Bristol City this afternoon following their 5-0 victory over Sunderland AFC. The Robins’ first game under interim head coach Loren Dykes, meanwhile, ended in a 1-1 draw with Southampton, and both sides entered the second week of the Barclays Women’s Championship 2024/25 season hungry for more.
Regardless of tireless endeavours in each of the 18-yard boxes, with the hosts in search of a long-awaited home win, and the Blues eager to assert further dominance, a tightly contested game at Ashton Gate saw nothing separate these two teams.

Birmingham City were arguable the more dangerous of the two teams for the majority of the first half. Amy Merricks’ side demonstrated constant eagerness to drive forward, arrowly more so than the red shirts around them, having flexed their muscles against Sunderland, but the Bristol outfit’s defence were also efficient in their efforts.
The Blues came especially close to an opener in the 15th minute after Bristol City conceded a free kick. Tegan McGowan connected well with a flick from Lily Aggs, but Fran Bentley’s luminescent low save kept the scoreline level.
The Robins fought hard to create opportunities of their own. Lucy Thomas, too, would have to be diligent between the sticks, making a save to stop Jamie-Lee Napier’s headed attempt from finding its way into the back of the net in the 26th minute.
As the break drew closer, Dykes’ side remained organised at the back to prevent pressure from the Blues from coming to fruition. Goalless at the referee’s whistle, it would be all to play for in the second half for the two close competitors.

Growing into the game, the Robins also had their fair share of chances, but both they and the guests struggled to make the most of their time in the final third, and lacked the necessary finishing touches.
As the clock ticked by the minutes of the second half, it remained a close affair, nothing separating the two sides. Two brilliant blocks, one from each goalkeeper, had been the most notable moments of the fixture.
A goal line clearance by Birmingham City’s Rebecca McKenna in the 62nd minute after Abi Harrison’s low shot took a deflection and Amalie Thestrup’s follow-up attempt was cleared by the defender, meant the deadlock continued. Nearing the 70th minute, there would be big chances at both ends of the pitch. Miraculously, however, neither would open the scoring.
Following a slight shift in momentum, Bristol City continued to threaten the Blues to the death. A failed interception by Rebecca Holloway saw Jesse Woolley presented with a moment to try for a long-distance strike. Despite her drive in front of a rigorous Birmingham defence, the shot landed on the wrong side of the upper netting, and the stalemate remained so.

Birmingham City have the week to iron out any creases and get their goalscoring boots back on before meeting with Durham the following week.
