Viviane Asseyi has been flying for West Ham, she is enjoying her best season in claret and blue with 10 goal involvements in the Barclays Women’s Super League in 15 matches. That form has helped the Hammers to create history this season winning five home games in the Barclays Women’s Super League for the very first time.

The French striker returned to the Hammers starting line up after serving a one match suspension that saw her miss out on the visit of Manchester City last time out. Her restoration to the line up made all the different for West Ham and it was her goal that clinched victory for the home side in the dying embers.

After that derby day victory over Tottenham Hotspur The Halfway Line got the chance to speak with West Ham’s key player.

When you think of Viviane Asseyi you think of goals, you think of tormenting defences and intelligent expertise from set pieces. However Asseyi could be seen more than once on Sunday afternoon tracking back, slide tackling and shepherding the ball away from danger in the defensive third. The Halfway Line asked Asseyi if she enjoyed that part of the game and if she is becoming an all round player? She laughed:

“Yeah! I would say it’s my job! When I signed here, I said I want to give everything, and I try every day to show it on the training [pitch] and in the game, and when I scored a goal for the team, it’s good, and I hope I will score more.”

West Ham finished 11th in last year’s Barclays Women’s Super League but with their form this year they are eying the upper reaches of the table having now leapfrogged Spurs into 8th knowing that another win could take them into the top half. Asseyi explained how the team have improved:

“We’ve improved, I think you can see it by the results, by the work that we do every day, but [also by] the new players who come in who help us. And yeah, the club puts everything to make us better. And yeah, every day is different. Of course, we have a lot of games. We did some mistakes, but we work every day to to avoid that and do it better every time.”

Looking towards the rest of the season, The Halfway Line asked Asseyi what the goal was for West Ham:

“To give everything to finish the highest as possible. Everything is possible. We know that. Of course, we have a lot of big games. These five game will be really good games to play, but also [they will be] big games. So we just take it one game by one game. Today, we enjoyed this this win because it was a derby, and it’s really good to win this one.”

The French striker also spoke about the fans impact on the team and her delight to deliver a derby day victory, she reflected:

“We know that is important for us, of course, but also for the fans. They come all the time to see us. I know that West Ham will appreciate if we win today, all of the West Ham fans so I’m happy for the team, because we deserve it we are really a good team. We work together, and I think we deserve this win today.”

Next up for West Ham is a trip to Kingsmeadow to face Chelsea knowing that victory to put them as high as 6th in the table.
