Championship golden boot leader Isobel Goodwin speaks to The Halfway Line ahead of the league’s final-day showdown between London City Lionesses and Birmingham City in the fight for promotion.

One point from this Sunday’s clash will be enough for London City as they travel to St. Andrew’s to face second-place Birmingham City in the fight for WSL promotion.

Speaking to The Halfway Line, Isobel Goodwin said she is ready for the “biggest game in her career.”

“I think it’s huge. I think for me personally, like this is probably one of the biggest games of my career. Everyone obviously wants to get promoted, that’s our goal, that’s what we want to do, we want to be in the WSL. So I think for the for the first year in the project, we hope that we can do it. We have positive vibes going into it, and I think we have the belief that we can do it.”

Goodwin believes that if London City are to achieve promotion for the 2025/26 season, her side has what it takes to avoid the yo-yo fate suffered by both Crystal Palace and Bristol City over recent seasons.

“I think I was saying to some of the girls the other day that if we do go up, we will stay there. I think obviously they will invest into probably some very good players, and I think we’d be able to compete in there. I hope for myself personally, I hope I would be able to compete in it as well. I think we have a very, very good chance, and I think we’ll probably be in there and hopefully go on to win the WSL in the next few years. That’s the aim.”

Goodwin has netted 15 goals in the Championship this season, currently leading the league’s golden boot charge. Reflecting on her personal campaign, Goodwin remained completely humble.

“On a personal level I think I have had a good season. Obviously my job is to score goals, and obviously I’ve done that. I think it’s obviously a team game, and as long as I’m helping the team out, and if that’s if that has been goals, if that’s the assist, I’m happy, just as long as we get the three points at the end of the day. I’m really happy with this season, and hopefully I can do that in the WSL next season.”

Michele Kang is ‘someone that really cares’ about the women’s game

Michele Kang acquired London City Lionesses in December 2023, and has since embarked on a spirited journey of investment into the world of English women’s football. Having only broken away from Millwall Football Club five years prior, Kang has sights set on making London City Lionesses a global football giant.

Often on the receiving end of criticism from fans concerned by her multi-ownership agenda (having equal part in both Olympique Lyonnais and Washington Spirit), it has become clear that Kang’s business-focus on women’s football is rooted in the plain fact that she simply believes in the sport’s value.

This was echoed in Goodwin’s comments when the striker deemed Kang as “just someone that really cares.”

“I think it’s really nice, knowing that she’s there. Obviously she comes to quite a lot of the games, and I think she’s quite a lucky charm, we only win the games she comes to so hopefully when she’s there on Sunday, she can bring that lucky charm.

“I think she’s just like such a powerful woman, I think what she brings to us is great and obviously what we want more in women’s football. She’s great.”

London City Lionesses will travel to St. Andrew’s this Sunday to face Birmingham City on the final day of the Women’s Championship season.

SkySports will be broadcasted the game live for the first time in the competition’s history, with coverage beginning at 14:00 on Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports+, with kick-off at 14:15.
