According to French news outlet L’Equipe, Olympique Lyonnais head coach Joe Montemurro is set for an end of season departure. His destination, a ‘done deal’ to become the next manager of the Matildas.
As per reports, Montemurro’s arrival at the Australian women’s national team set up is already a done deal, set to take the role just 10 months out from a home Asian Cup tournament.
The Matildas have been without a head coach for 278 days, following Tony Gustavsson’s departure from the role after a shocking tournament for the Australians at Paris 2024. Since then, interim head coach Tom Sermanni has taken the ropes, leaving fans in limbo over whether or not a permanent solution is on the horizon.
Montemurro’s departure from Lyon comes in the wake of a disappointing UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final, where his side were eliminated 5-3 on aggregate by Arsenal. Named as Sonia Bompastor’s successor to the throne, Lyon have missed out on a Champions League final and the Couple de France, this season won by Paris FC.
