England star Millie Bright has withdrawn herself from selection for the upcoming Euros in order to take time away from football to focus on her health.
The defender withdrew from England’s May camp roster, admitting that she was in need of a much needed break away from football. Taking to social media on Wednesday, Bright told fans that she will not be available for selection as the Lionesses prepare to defend their European title this summer in Switzerland.
“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make but after careful thought and discussions with my team, I have decided to withdraw from selection for the England squad ahead of Euro 2025,” Bright wrote. “Football has given me so much and representing my country has always been my greatest honour. My pride and ego tells me to go but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now I’m not able to give 100% mentally or physically.”
“As much as I want to be out there running through brick walls for England and fighting alongside my teammates, stepping back is the right thing for my health, my future, the game and most importantly the team. It wouldn’t be fair for me to take the place and opportunity away from another player who is ready to give everything for the badge and country.”
The Chelsea captain was integral to her side’s domestic success this season, securing the domestic treble in emphatic and domestic fashion. Bright also captained the Lionesses at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, after an ACL injury discounted Leah Williamson from the tournament.
Sarina Wiegman’s side also bid farewell to England legend Fran Kirby, who announced her retirement from international football after the nation’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the UEFA Women’s Nations League, and goalkeeper Mary Earps, who also announced her retirement from international football.
