World Champions Spain will be hungry to conquer Europe as they prepare to fight for glory at Euro 2025.
Now entering their fifth European Championships, the Spanish giants will be eager to back-up their victorious campaign that saw the side crowned the champions of the world at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Fresh off the back of an impressive Nations League campaign, Spain will certainly be the frontrunners to claim glory in Switzerland.
Form heading into Euro 2025
Doubts were shadowed over Spain following a 1-0 defeat to tournament holders England under the arch of Wembley Stadium back in February. However, the champions have since proved why they should be feared heading into the tournament in Switzerland, winning five consecutive Nations League fixtures and triumphing 2-1 over the Lionesses in recent weeks.
Scoring 18 goals in their last four fixtures, the Spanish certainly pass the eye test when picking a favourite to win the upcoming Euros. Comprehensive back-to-back victories over Portugal saw the side win 2-4 and 7-1 home and away. What followed was a triumphant 5-1 victory over Belgium on the road, before the World Champions claimed victory over the Lionesses in the final competitive fixture ahead of the Euros.
If we are to play devil’s advocate, it is true that all superheroes still have a weakness. Despite their prolific form in front of goal, Spain were unable to hold a clean sheet in all six of their recent Nations League fixtures. The side are often leaky at the back, and can fall victim to concentration lapses that the top nations at Euro 2025 will draw blood from immediately.
History at the Women’s Euros
Despite their recent dominance on the world stage, Spain’s best result at the Women’s Euros came in 1997 when the side fell out in the semi-final following a 2-1 defeat to Italy. The nation have competed at 4 Women’s Euros in their history, playing 16 games, winning 5, drawing 3 and losing 8.
In the last three tournaments, Spain have sailed out of the group stages but fallen out at the quarter final stages. The side’s highest winning margin came in 2022 when they defeated Finland 4-1 during the group stages. Their biggest lost came against Norway in 2013, losing the quarter final 3-1.
Spain players to watch at Euro 2025
It would be undeniably obvious to list off every player ready to represent Spain at Euro 2025 as one to watch considering the sheer firepower of the squad at hand.
18-year-old Vicky López is a great place to start, heading to her very first major tournament at a senior level. The fast-paced attacker can play in the central midfield areas, or ply her trade down the right wing as she usually does for her club, Barcelona. Making her senior debut for Spain in 2024 during the Nations League finals, López’s call-up to the Euros squad provides head coach Montserrat Tomé with a strong wildcard off the bench.
Did you know? López was eligible to play for Nigeria because of her mother. She has previously expressed her admiration for the team, but pledged her allegiance to Spain.
Someone who will certainly be banging in the goals for La Roja is none other than Clàudia Pina. The 23-year-old forward has been in hot form, recently coming off the bench to score a brace and steal a 2-1 win over England.
Rapid with the ball at her feet and a genius at finding the spaces, Pina will certainly be ready to terrorise defences in order to lead Spain to victory in Switzerland.
Another firing forward that will be eager to make an impact at Euro 2025 is 32-year-old Esther González. The Spanish striker has started the season incredibly well for NWSL side NJ/NY Gotham FC, scoring 10 goals in 13 games so far.
Track record against Euro 2025 group opponents
Provided with slight breathing room ahead of their Group B opponents, the World Champions will be eyeing up the top spot in their party.
First up is Portugal in Bern, a nation that the Spanish have been given ample time to weigh up following recent nations league fixtures. The sides have faced off three times in history, Spain running out victors on each occasion. The aggregate scoreline for the three meeting has been 8-1, placing the odds in Spain’s favour.
Next up, Spain will face Belgium, a team they’ve encountered eight times before. Spain have won five of the encounters, drawn one, and lost three. The aggregate scoreline is 23-4 in favour of the World Champions. Belgium are another team that Spain have had to face in the recent Nations League group games, and the Belgians managed to cause some issues in the first leg encounter. The Red Flames took an early 2-0 lead, and despite losing the game 3-2, managed to sniff out some of Spain’s weaknesses.
The third and final team Spain are preparing to face during the group stages is Italy. Despite the nation’s low profile over recent years, Italy are certainly a dark horse to keep an eye on. The two sides have faced each other on seven occasions, the Italians stealing four of those wins. Spain have won once, and have drawn twice.
With a squad nearly as good as it can possibly be and history keenly on their side, Euro 2025 is certainly Spain’s to lose.
