England cemented their place in the history books as Chloe Kelly’s winning penalty secured Euro 2025 glory.
After Spain’s Mariona Caldentey put La Roja ahead in Basel, the Lionesses were able to fight back thanks to a pin-point delivery from Chloe Kelly and a strong headed finish from Alessia Russo.
The end-to-end spectacle was decided in a thrilling penalty shootout, as Arsenal star Chloe Kelly fired home her spot kick to win Euro 2025 for the Lionesses for the second time in her career.
The victory in Switzerland puts the Lionesses in a league of their own, now the only English team to win a major tournament on foreign soil.
Sarina Wiegman says Lionesses are going to party
Much like the players, England head coach Sarina Wiegman is in a league of her own after lifting three European trophies in a row.
“I’m very happy,” Wiegman said after the match. “I actually can’t believe it myself. How can this happen? But it happened. I’m so incredibly proud of the team and the staff. We’re just going to party tonight.”
“We’ve got so far now in this tournament. I think we all, we created something again together. So these are the moments where you dream of, some couldn’t even dream of because it wasn’t possible when they were little kids. So go out there and enjoy it.”
Chloe Kelly writes England into the history books… again
There was only one player who was going to steal victory for the Lionesses, and it had to be Chloe Kelly.
Just six months ago, Kelly was considering whether or not to give up playing football following a turbulent time at former club Manchester City. Left out of the England squad and struggling for minutes, Kelly just wanted to fall in love with football again.
Fast forward to July and she has won both Euro 2025 with England and the Champions League with Arsenal in just two months.
“There were a lot of tears at full-time especially when I saw my family because those were the people that got me through those tough dark moments,” Kelly said.
“If that’s a story to tell, someone who maybe experiences something the same, tough times don’t last. Just around the corner was a Champions League final, won that. Then a Euros final, won that. Thank you to everyone that wrote me off, I’m grateful.”
