Tottenham Hotspur head coach Martin Ho says his side can compete with anyone in the Women’s Super League (WSL).
An impressive start to their WSL campaign has left Tottenham Hotspur on a maximum of six points after two games, with new manager Martin Ho looking ahead to their biggest challenge so far this season as they host Manchester City at Brisbane Road on Friday night.
Ho confirmed that the trio of Matilda Vinberg, Martha Thomas and Ashleigh Neville have all returned to training this week after missing the opening two games with minor injuries.
Coming off the back of an impressive 2-0 win away at Everton, Ho responded to comments made by Brian Sorensen, complimenting Ho and his Spurs side.
“There’s a game plan, a way we play, in terms of individual aspects, but the core principles and foundations don’t change.
“We may have changed some of the defensive organisation in moments to set more traps (Vs Everton), but I don’t think we changed much in terms of the principles and concepts we look at. I thought in that game we were brilliant from start to finish.”
‘Hardworking’ Tottenham can compete against anyone says Ho
While many questioned how Spurs would do this season after a difficult campaign last season saw them finish 11th, their new boss spoke glowingly of his squad and the work they’ve put in.
“I’m not surprised because I see the work, I see the effort, commitment and passion of the players when they’re training. I know that no player or team goes onto the pitch wanting to underperform. Since I’ve been here, I’ve seen a really hard-working, committed group.”
Friday night will see the return of Spurs fan-favourite Grace Clinton to Brisbane Road. Ho has worked with her during multiple stops in both their careers and warned of how dangerous she can be.
“I’ve worked with Grace for numerous years when I was at Everton, also worked with her when I was at Manchester United too. She’s a wonderful player, super talented. We have to make sure we stop Grace if we come up against her on Friday.”
Finally, looking ahead at their opponents, it’s no secret that Manchester City have been the far superior side in recent years. However the North London side are heading into the game with a positive mindset and Ho is optimistic of their chances.
“I feel that when we perform on our day, we’re competitive with most teams. We know there’ll be a difference in little bits of quality at times, moments of individual brilliance, which is natural in football; we have those players in our team too. But, from a squad perspective, when the 11v11 steps onto the pitch, I back us against anyone.”
