NWSL club San Diego Wave have sued former president Jill Ellis for a misleading resignation that lead to $40 million loss in club revenue.
Ellis, who was president of San Diego Wave for four years, is being accused of misleading the club after promising the new owners she would stay after its sale, before resigning days later to take up a role at FIFA.
It is said that Ellis repeatedly agreed to remain at the club after its sale, but went back on her promise just days after Lauren Leichtman and Arthur Levine acquired the club for $113million USD.
Filed in the San Diego Superior Court this week, the suit “accused Ellis and other unnamed defendants of intentional and negligent misrepresentation, concealment, and false promise”, to which the lawsuit “led to lost revenue equating to” $40M in the club’s value. An attorney speaking on behalf of Ellis has claimed that the suit has been filed in retaliation to Ellis demanding a compensation sum owed to her in a previous contract.
Ellis, 59, is now the Chief Football Officer at FIFA.
