Germany will host UEFA Euro 2029 after the UEFA Executive Committee agreed and announced the decision on Wednesday.
The announcement ceremony took place at UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. After a bid from Portugal was withdrawn last month the competition was narrowed down to just three bids. Only Poland, Germany, and a joint bid from Sweden and Denmark remained in the running to host on Wednesday morning. In a short ceremony, the President of UEFA, Aleksander Čeferin announced that Germany were the winners of the bid.
Germany to host UEFA EURO 2029
Germany will host UEFA EURO 2029, staging the competition for the third time. The successful bid received 15 of 17 votes, with the joint bid from Denmark-Sweden getting the other two.
The European footballing powerhouse are the most successful country in the history of the Women’s EURO and will host the competition for the first time since 2001. In 1989 West Germany hosted the competition in just the competitions third edition. In each of the previous tournaments on home turf, Germany emerged as champions.
After the DFB [German Football Association] successfully hosted the men’s edition of the competition in 2024, UEFA saw fit to award the central European nation the tournament again. The 2025 edition of the competition in Switzerland broke records. The final tally of 657,291 attendees took the overall average to 20,000 per game for the first time. Germany will offer a new opportunity to break attendance records in the competition with a litany of state of the art stadiums as the women’s game continues to grow.
After winning the competition six times in a row between 1995 and 2013 Germany have failed to win the competition since. Germany will look to return to the top step of European football after being toppled in the semi final of UEFA EURO 2025 by Spain. Spain themselves will hope to win the competition for the first time. Spain recently bounced back from defeat in the EURO 2025 final with triumph over Germany in the final of the UEFA Nations League in Madrid last night.
Defending champions the Lionesses will hope they can make it three European Championship victories in a row in 2029.
