Netherlands legend Sherida Spitse has announced her retirement from international football as the most-capped European player in history.
“I feel it’s time to let go” said Sherida Spitse in a heartfelt video posted by the Oranje Leeuwinnen social media accounts as she retires from international football.
With 247 caps currently to her name, she is the most capped European player. She will likely reach at least 248 caps, as she is set to play her final international game in the Netherlands friendly match against Canada on the 28th of October.
She represented the Netherlands in 8 major tournaments: 5 Euros and 3 World Cups. Spitse has won the Euros with the Netherlands and captained the team to the World Cup final in 2019.
“I have talked to family, friends and Arjan [Veurink] a lot recently. Everything considered, I feel that it’s time to let go”, says Spitse.
New head coach Arjan Veurink says the Netherlands are saying goodbye to an icon: “With her impressive international career, Sherida has been instrumental in the growth of women’s football in the Netherlands. I have a great deal of respect for Sherida. We’ve shared some wonderful successes together and always had a great working relationship”, Veurink reflects.
