Renée Slegers has said that her Arsenal team ‘need to keep things simple’ in order regain their confidence in front of goal.

The Arsenal head coach spoke to the media following her side’s narrow 1-0 victory over HB Køge in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and The Halfway Line was present to hear from her.

Slegers was asked whether after Arsenal failed to get the early goal, panic set off in the team,

“I think so and that’s been the last three games” Slegers earnestly replied. “So that’s something that we’ve gone through as a team, as a squad staff and player group. And which we said after the game, we are together in this.

“We’re going through this together, you know and we’ll come out of it stronger as a collective. And the most positive thing is that we stayed in it, showed resilience and mentality and got the goal in the end. That’s where our focus is. Like I said, I don’t want to overanalyse and overcomplicate things, keeping things simple, move forward.”

Arsenal have struggled in front of goal so far this term, scoring only three times in four matches. Their difficulties scoring led to a succession of draws but their late breakthrough prevented another against Køge last night. Slegers was asked how she can help Arsenal figure out a solution to this difficult period in front of goal,

“Making things simple and easy to understand and easy to execute” Slegers replied. “So those are probably the main two. And then also involving the players as much as possible and getting their input?

“What do you see? What do you feel on the pitch? And what’s your perception in the moment? What’s your analysis afterwards? To understand what it’s like for the players. I think the main one is to keep things simple.”
