The Spurs went marching on last night, as a Kit Graham belter saw Tottenham claim a 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic in the fifth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

Speaking to Graham after the final whistle, the match winner gave her thoughts on the display in E10, speaking of Tottenham’s match opponents in high praise.

“They’re a good team, they’re doing well this season in the league below so we knew it was going to be a scrappy game at times. They made it hard for us, it was hard to break them down and get clear cut chances, but thankfully we got the one and that’s all that matters.”

Graham’s outside of the box finish happened to arrive against her former side- the English midfielder having spent 14 years in Charlton red. Speaking on the experience of scoring against a club she holds such sentiment for, Graham held all celebrations to a circumspect reflection.

“Bit of a weird one scoring against your old team but like I said before, in the moment you kind of forget that and you’re just glad that it’s gone in the back of the net and you don’t have to go to extra time.”

I feel like I know I’ve got goals in me, and if I get the opportunity at the edge of the box I want to take those shots on. So, that’s what I did and thankfully it went in.”

Tottenham’s opponents in Charlton have been in firing form as of late, currently sitting two points clear at the league table summit in the Barclays Women’s Championship. Reflecting on whether she believes her former outfit could be set for league promotion, Graham was sure to hold belief.

“They’re doing a great job this season. They’re a hard team to break down and they’re good on the attack so, why not eh?”

Robert Vilahamn’s welcome to North London has seen Graham’s positioning adjusted to suit a much deeper role within the field’s central areas. Graham reflected on what that learning curve has been like, reflecting excitedly on the style of football she is beginning to play.

“Obviously I need to learn the role more but I’m really enjoying getting on the ball more. I feel like I’ve got a lot more time on the ball than in the 10, and I’m used a lot. That’s what I like doing- I like being on the ball and playmaking so it’s given me that opportunity.”

Despite the season having its ebbs and flows for the Spurs, Tottenham have found a resurgence in form since the signing of new manager, Robert Vilahamn. Last season’s campaign saw the Spurs down and out on match days, only accumulating 18 points across the season’s duration. Since Vilahamn’s arrival at Hotspur Way, the tone has visibly shifted amongst the squad.

“I’m sure you’ve heard it before but he’s a super nice guy, and I think we needed that at the start of the season. A fresh start, someone that came in and connected really well with the team, and he’s done that. We enjoy his style of football and I think you can tell that in our performances.

It’s a contrast to last year, where this year we actually have belief to go on and win games. We didn’t just see that out defensively, like we want to go score goals. We’re enjoying it.”

Vilahamn has been working to implement an attacking brand of football in North London, praising his side’s new found ability to trust themselves in being “brave footballers”. The attacking style suits Graham perfectly, something she reflected on with validation.

“Obviously I’m an attacking player so I love attacking football. I think the players that we’ve got really suit it as well, so it’s just about gelling as a team and hopefully we can push on from here.”

The victory at Brisbane Road sees the Spurs back in the hat for the Adobe Women’s FA Cup quarterfinal draw. As the road to Wembley gets closer, Graham says Tottenham are daring to dream.

“Yeah I think so, there’s definitely belief in the team that we can. We just have to see who we get in the next draw.”
