Liverpool have confirmed that the club have decided to part ways with head coach Matt Beard with immediate effect.
The announcement follows a turbulent period for the Reds, currently sitting in seventh place on the Women’s Super League (WSL) table with just four wins to their name.
Beard led Liverpool to promotion from the Championship in 2021, before achieving a strong fourth place finish in the 2023/24 WSL season. Liverpool’s campaign saw the side finish above Manchester United, earning Beard the award for WSL Manager of the Season.
The Merseyside club have struggled to hold onto the strong form this campaign, enduring tough injury luck along the way.
Liverpool confirmed Beard’s departure via an official club statement, thanking Beard for his contribution to the side over recent years.
“We have all experienced some fantastic moments with Matt as manager of LFC Women and we express our gratitude for his significant contribution. Our priority was to return this team to where it belongs and we collectively achieved that in 2022 by winning promotion to the WSL.
“We need to build on that momentum and although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for future success on the pitch.”
The club have confirmed that Amber Whiteley will step in as interim head coach as the search for a permanent manager now commences.
